Last month Birdmonster teamed up with ASCAP and America SCORES for 3 songwriting workshops with the students of Bret Harte Elementary. Follow the tubes to The Tripwire for a live recording of Tomato Blues, a song we co-wrote with these budding artists. America SCORES is an afterschool program with a mission to empower students in urban communities using soccer, writing, creative expression, and service-learning. With teamwork as the unifying value, we inspire youth to lead healthy lifestyles, be engaged students, and become agents of change in their communities. The ASCAP Songwriter Residency program brings professional musicians (Saul Williams, Adonis) into the classroom to teach students the art of songwriting and the importance of copyright, as well as to co-write and record original songs with them.
Working with the kids at Bret Harte was an incredible experience, and it deserves confessing that we learned a lot from them as well. A young person's imagination is truly fearless. When they have an idea they just run with it, without any of that pesky self-consciousness that can complicate great art. That was a real inspiration to witness.
